EHang's Pilotless Air Taxi Flies First Route in Hong Kong

EHang's EH216-S, a pilotless two-seat eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft, completed its first public flight in Hong Kong on August 28, 2026, taking off from a waterfront vertiport at Cyberport under the city government's new "Regulatory Sandbox X" program. Background
Hong Kong launched Regulatory Sandbox X as part of its broader push into the low-altitude economy — commercial and passenger activity flown below roughly 1,000 feet, covering delivery drones, aerial inspection, and now pilotless air taxis. The sandbox groups 33 pilot projects testing non-conventional aircraft in a controlled setting, with the government targeting dedicated low-altitude aviation legislation by 2027. Rather than write rules first and test later, Hong Kong is running real flights to generate the safety and reliability data regulators need before those rules are drafted.
EHang, based in Guangzhou, is the company best positioned to supply that data. Its EH216-S became the world's first eVTOL to receive a Type Certificate, in October 2023, followed by a Production Certificate and a Standard Airworthiness Certificate from China's CAAC (Civil Aviation Administration of China) — the full set of approvals China's aviation regulator requires before a passenger-carrying aircraft can be built and sold. EHang says the airframe has logged more than 30,000 test flights, including flights in typhoons, desert heat, and fog.
What Happened at Cyberport
The August 28 flight took the EH216-S through vertical takeoff and landing, low-altitude cruise, and hover maneuvers along a pre-programmed route over the water off Cyberport, on Hong Kong Island's southern coast. No pilot or remote operator flew the aircraft in real time; onboard flight-control software executed the route, with ground staff monitoring for safety.
Michael Wong, Hong Kong's Deputy Financial Secretary, called the flight "an important milestone in the development of Hong Kong's low-altitude economy." Cyberport chairman Simon Chan said the site would keep "enhancing low-altitude flight support facilities" to host further trials, and Timothy Wong of Kwoon Chung Bus — whose KC Smart Mobility unit is involved in the project — said the goal is a "one-stop 3D travel experience" linking ground and air transport. EHang chief operating officer Zhao Wang described the sandbox model as "a replicable model for introducing pilotless aviation," one the company wants to repeat in other markets that don't yet have rules for autonomous passenger aircraft.
