The DJI Mini 4 Pro launched in September 2023 with a clear mission: finish what the Mini 3 Pro left incomplete. The biggest leap was in the collision-avoidance system - the new model gained omnidirectional detection (front, rear, sides, top, and bottom), something the previous generation only did in three directions. All of it packed into 249 grams, keeping the drone below the FAA's 0.55 lb (250g) registration threshold for recreational use.

But the weight and familiar name don't tell the whole story. The DJI Mini 4 Pro also brought O4 transmission (up to 12 miles of range), 4K/100fps recording with a 10-bit D-Log M color profile, and a new tracking feature called ActiveTrack 360°. At the same time, the price climbed above its predecessor - and the real question is whether that evolution justifies the investment.

This review examines every aspect of the drone with a focus on what it means for pilots flying in the US and globally.

Camera and Image Quality

The 1/1.3-inch sensor is the same size as the Mini 3 Pro's, but DJI expanded the recording options significantly. Full-resolution 4K/60fps is now available across the board. For slow motion, the Mini 4 Pro captures 4K/100fps - a step above what the previous model offered.

The 10-bit D-Log M support is the real differentiator for anyone who edits professionally. This color profile preserves more detail in shadows and highlights, making color grading in post-production far more flexible. HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) is the alternative for those who want HDR output without applying LUTs.

For photos, the 48MP sensor operates in quad-Bayer mode: by default it outputs 12MP images with larger effective pixels (better for low light) and can export full 48MP files when you need maximum detail. RAW capture is supported.

The 3-axis gimbal delivers effective stabilization even in moderate wind. For vertical recording - Reels, TikTok, and Stories - the Mini 4 Pro has a native mode that rotates the gimbal 90°, eliminating the need to crop in editing.

Battery Life and Range

With the standard Intelligent Flight Battery (2,590 mAh), DJI rates the Mini 4 Pro at 34 minutes. In real-world conditions - light wind, temperatures around 75°F (25°C) - expect 28 to 30 usable minutes after accounting for the return-to-home safety buffer.

The Plus battery (3,850 mAh) extends the rated flight time to 45 minutes. The trade-off is weight: the Plus battery pushes the total drone weight above 249g when installed. This has direct regulatory implications - drones 0.55 lbs (250g) or heavier require FAA registration via FAA DroneZone and fall under additional operational considerations for commercial use. Check the FAA's Part 107 guidelines if you plan to use the Plus battery in a professional context.

The O4 transmission system is a meaningful upgrade from the O3 in the Mini 3 Pro. The theoretical 12-mile range is rarely achievable in practice - obstacles and RF interference reduce that significantly - but the live feed quality improved noticeably, delivering a 1080p/60fps feed with no perceptible lag during normal urban flights.

APAS 4.0 (Advanced Pilot Assistance System) omnidirectional obstacle avoidance is the most structurally significant upgrade in the Mini 4 Pro. The system uses computer vision sensors in every direction and calculates avoidance routes in real time. In practice, the drone can navigate around branches, wires, and structures while executing automated maneuvers.

Other available flight modes:

  • ActiveTrack 360° - subject tracking with independent camera angle control while the drone orbits, pulls back, or approaches
  • Spotlight 2.0 - locks the camera on a fixed point while the pilot moves the drone freely
  • Hyperlapse - Circle, Course Lock, Free, and Waypoint modes
  • QuickShots - Dronie, Circle, Helix, Rocket, Boomerang, and Asteroid
  • Master Shots - automated cinematic shot sequence built around a point of interest

Return to Home (RTH) operates via GPS and activates manually or automatically on signal loss. The pilot can configure the minimum RTH altitude to clear local obstacles.

The Mini 2 SE remains the right choice for those just starting out who don't need obstacle avoidance or D-Log M. It's the most affordable drone in the DJI ecosystem with acceptable quality for casual video. See the full breakdown in our best beginner drones guide.

The Mini 3 Pro has lost its prime position with the Mini 4 Pro's arrival, but still makes sense for buyers prioritizing value: the ~$120 price difference buys an extra battery or a quality ND filter set.

Tip: the RC 2 version (built-in screen) is recommended for flying in bright sunlight - it eliminates phone glare and provides significantly better visual feedback in the field.

Prices fluctuate with promotions. Black Friday and holiday sales typically bring 10–20% discounts on consumer DJI models.

Where to Buy the DJI Mini 4 Pro with Official Warranty

Buy from an authorized channel to access DJI Care Refresh and full support:

  • DJI's US Store - store.dji.com - official store, direct manufacturer warranty
  • Best Buy - authorized retailer with in-store pickup and easy returns
  • B&H Photo - reliable for electronics, fast shipping, excellent service history
  • Amazon - when sold and shipped by Amazon directly (not third-party Marketplace sellers)

Avoid purchasing from unofficial resellers with prices significantly below market - you risk receiving a drone without a US warranty, with region-locked firmware, or refurbished units sold as new.

DJI Care Refresh: Is It Worth It?

DJI Care Refresh is fully available in the United States. The plan covers:

  • Collisions and crashes (up to 2 replacements per year)
  • Water damage
  • Flyaway incidents

For a drone in the $599–$759 range, DJI Care Refresh provides meaningful peace of mind, especially during the learning phase when accidents are most likely. DJI Care Refresh for the Mini 4 Pro costs approximately $79/year for the standard plan and $139/year for the Plus plan (which includes an additional replacement).

Is It Worth Buying in 2026?

The Mini 4 Pro holds up well in 2026. The omnidirectional APAS 4.0, O4 transmission, and 4K/100fps with D-Log M still represent a premium feature set that no competitor at this weight class has fully matched.

For those already flying a Mini 3 Pro in good condition, the upgrade is hard to justify on specs alone. The most relevant improvements are omnidirectional obstacle avoidance and O4 transmission - but if you already fly carefully and rarely trigger obstacle avoidance, the day-to-day difference is small.

For those buying their first advanced drone, the Mini 4 Pro makes a compelling entry into the prosumer segment: top-tier camera in the sub-250g class, competitive battery life, and a well-established accessory ecosystem. The 249g weight (with standard battery) also keeps you below the FAA registration threshold for recreational use, simplifying operations.

Content creators benefit most from native vertical mode and ActiveTrack 360° - features that previously required either editing time or significantly more expensive equipment.

items:

  • question: "Does the DJI Mini 4 Pro need to be registered with the FAA?" answer: "For recreational use with the standard battery, the Mini 4 Pro weighs 249g - below the 0.55 lb (250g) FAA registration threshold, so registration is not required. However, using the Plus battery pushes the weight above 250g, which would require FAA registration via FAA DroneZone. For commercial use under Part 107, the weight threshold still applies and the remote pilot certificate is required regardless."
  • question: "Does the Mini 3 Pro battery work in the Mini 4 Pro?" answer: "No. The Mini 4 Pro's Intelligent Flight Battery and Battery Plus have a different form factor from the Mini 3 Pro batteries. They are not cross-compatible between models."
  • question: "What is the difference between the RC-N2 and RC 2 controllers?" answer: "The RC-N2 has no built-in screen - you mount your phone to view the camera feed. The RC 2 has an integrated 5.5-inch screen with 1,000 nits of brightness, eliminating the need for a phone entirely. The RC 2 is significantly more convenient in bright outdoor conditions and is the recommended option for most users."
  • question: "Does the DJI Mini 4 Pro shoot 4K at 60fps?" answer: "Yes. The Mini 4 Pro records 4K/60fps at full resolution. For slow motion, it supports 4K/100fps. Both modes are available with the 10-bit D-Log M color profile enabled."
  • question: "Is the Fly More Combo worth buying?" answer: "For most buyers, yes. The Fly More Combo includes extra batteries, a charging hub, and a carrying bag - items you would almost certainly purchase separately at higher total cost. If you plan on longer sessions or regular use, the combo is the better value. For very casual or occasional use, the standard kit is enough to get started."
