In September 2023, DJI launched the Mini 4 Pro with an ambitious promise: omnidirectional obstacle avoidance in a drone weighing under 250 grams. Before it, that combination simply didn't exist.

The 250g threshold matters for regulatory reasons. In many countries — including the US, UK, EU, and Brazil — drones below this weight face lighter registration requirements and more permissive operating conditions. The Mini 4 Pro preserves that advantage while delivering camera specs and safety features previously found only in larger, heavier drones.

Camera and Image Quality

The 1/1.3" CMOS sensor with 48 megapixels is the same found in the DJI Air 3, a more expensive and significantly heavier drone. The variable aperture F/1.7–F/4 enables real depth-of-field control and better low-light performance compared to the 1/2.3" sensors of the previous generation.

For video, the Mini 4 Pro shoots 4K/60fps at up to 150 Mbps in D-Log M profile — a format that preserves exposure latitude and simplifies color grading in post. The most relevant addition for vertical content creators is native 2.7K portrait mode recording (no crop), designed for Instagram Reels and TikTok.

Active Track 360° uses the omnidirectional obstacle avoidance to follow moving subjects while avoiding collisions — something the Mini 3 Pro couldn't do with its three-directional detection.

Obstacle Avoidance: The Generation's Differentiator

The APAS 360° system with six-direction sensors is the Mini 4 Pro's main argument over its predecessors and competitors at similar weight. It detects and autonomously routes around obstacles during automated flights and in ActiveTrack mode, significantly reducing crash risk.

Important note: in standard manual flight, the system warns about obstacles but doesn't autonomously avoid them. Autonomous evasion primarily operates in intelligent flight modes.

Battery and Range

The standard 2,590 mAh battery delivers up to 34 minutes in ideal conditions — expect 24–28 minutes in real-world use factoring in wind, temperature, and automated modes. The Fly More Combo Plus includes the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus (3,850 mAh) extending endurance to up to 45 minutes.

The base package includes the RC-N1 controller, which requires a smartphone as its screen. The DJI RC 2 (with a built-in 1,000-nit display) is available separately and recommended for bright outdoor conditions.

Who It's For

The DJI Mini 4 Pro is the best value available for photographers and content creators who need professional-grade image quality without sacrificing the convenience of the 249g form factor. It's especially well-suited for:

  • Urban flying where the 249g weight reduces regulatory burden
  • Creators producing vertical content for social platforms
  • Pilots who want added safety in environments with obstacles
  • Those upgrading from entry-level drones and wanting a real quality jump

Those who fly exclusively in open areas and don't need obstacle avoidance should consider the Mini 2 SE ($299) as a more affordable alternative. Anyone wanting an even larger sensor should look at the Air 3S (1" sensor, $1,099+) — with the trade-off of a 720g body and no 249g regulatory benefit.
