Airbound Raises $37M for Delivery Drones That Beat Trucks

Bengaluru-based Airbound closed a $37 million Series A on August 24, 2026, led by Greenoaks with DoorDash, Lachy Groom, Lightspeed, and Humba Ventures participating. The startup also signed a commercial agreement to build an aerial delivery network across three districts of Andhra Pradesh, India, scaling to 10,000 drone flights a day for retail, e-commerce, and healthcare deliveries.

Background: A VTOL Drone Built to Undercut Trucking Costs

Airbound was founded in March 2023 and has raised nearly $50 million to date, including an $8.65 million seed round in October 2025. The company now employs more than 150 people out of a 43,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Bengaluru, India.

Its aircraft is a blended-wing-body tailsitter — a VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) design that launches straight up like a multirotor, then tips into level flight and cruises like a fixed-wing plane. That hybrid approach is what lets Airbound claim a payload-to-aircraft weight ratio of roughly 3:1, compared with an industry standard closer to 4:1, according to DroneLife. The current aircraft weighs 1.5 kg (3.3 lb) with a 1 kg (2.2 lb) payload and a 1.4-meter (4.6 ft) wingspan; a next-generation model in development is designed to carry up to 11 lb of cargo.

Founder and CEO Naman Pushp frames the goal in blunt terms: the company wants to "build towards a world where everything has cost parity with trucking."

Proven in the Field: 13,000 Flights, Zero Failures

Airbound isn't launching from a standing start. The company says it has completed more than 13,000 autonomous flights across Bengaluru and Guntur with no aircraft failures, including an operational corridor for Narayana Health running since January 2026.

That corridor covers roughly 2.5 miles (4 km) between a clinic and a hospital campus, carrying up to 40 diagnostic samples per flight across 10 daily round trips. Airbound says the flight takes about 7 minutes, versus 3 to 5 hours for the same trip by road — the kind of time savings that matters most for time-sensitive lab samples and medical deliveries.

The Andhra Pradesh Deal: What 10,000 Daily Flights Requires

The new Andhra Pradesh agreement is Airbound's largest commitment yet. Key details reported by TechCrunch and DroneLife:

DetailFigure
Coverage3 districts in Andhra Pradesh
Target flight volume10,000 flights per day
Sectors servedRetail, e-commerce, healthcare
Aircraft needed250 to 1,000, depending on route length
Government subsidyNone — a commercial agreement
StatusPre-commercial; regulatory framework still developing

No government contract or subsidy is involved — India's civil aviation regulator has not yet finalized the framework needed for routine beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations at this scale, so the network remains pre-commercial for now. Pushp has said the India market is a proving ground rather than the end goal: "If you can build something that works in India, it tends to work anywhere."

What This Means for Drone Pilots

Airbound's raise lands at a moment when eVTOL cargo platforms are attracting serious capital worldwide, from military logistics contracts to consumer last-mile delivery. For commercial drone operators, the signal is less about India specifically and more about the economics: Airbound is one of the first delivery-drone companies to publish a direct cost comparison against trucking rather than against other drones, which is the bar regulators and logistics customers in the US, EU, and elsewhere will eventually hold BVLOS delivery programs to as well.

Investors backing the round — DoorDash chief among them — also point to where the demand is coming from: existing logistics and delivery platforms looking to add aerial capacity rather than build it from scratch. Expect more of that pattern as VTOL cargo drones mature past pilot corridors and into networks sized for tens of thousands of flights a day.
